“…night is not merely the absence of light;
it is the space of what has not yet happened.”
— Oruç Aruoba

Perhaps the most powerful human trait is an enduring optimism—the belief that, despite all darkness, light will eventually break through. Staying awake becomes a form of resistance, a way of holding onto this expectation. The design of June Bar is rooted in this sense of hope.
Located in Teşvikiye, one of Istanbul’s established urban fabrics shaped by layered residential life and a strong street culture, the project is conceived not as a closed interior, but as a spatial extension of its surroundings. This approach frames the night not as a finite period, but as a field of unrealized potential.

...

Teşvikiye developed following its opening to settlement in the 19th century, gradually merging with Nişantaşı into a dense urban texture. The contiguous building fabric and limited open spaces have shifted much of public life into interiors. Ground-floor commercial uses, in turn, create a hybrid public layer that carries the continuity of the street indoors.
June engages with this urban condition, exploring how a listening bar can contribute to such a context. It reinterprets the Mediterranean bar typology through openness, permeability, and social interaction. Drawing from the idea that life in Mediterranean cities extends into the street and that boundaries between interior and exterior remain fluid, the space operates as a threshold that establishes continuity with the public realm.

Lighting is one of the project’s primary constructive elements. The space is conceived as a temporal environment that contains both sunrise and sunset within the span of a single night. Integrated lighting elements transform walls from passive boundaries into active spatial components.
The spatial organization is based on flexibility rather than a fixed plan. Circulation, seating, and gathering areas interconnect to support multiple scenarios of use. With all seating elements removable, the space can be fully cleared and transformed into a platform for performances.

...

Within this framework, June is designed as a listening bar. It creates space for new-generation DJs and producers, establishing a direct relationship between the audience and the creator. The spatial organization is built upon this interaction. The project treats the night not as a consumable timeframe, but as a continuously evolving urban condition shaped through use, interaction, and time.
